Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) held its 20th Honorary University Fellowship Conferment Ceremony today (25 September). Honorary University Fellowships were conferred on four distinguished persons, namely Professor the Hon Chan Wing-kwong (陳永光教授), Mr Chui Wing-on (徐永安先生), Ms Ho Yuen-kei (何宛淇女士) and Ms So Ching (蘇晴女士), in recognition of their outstanding contributions to a wide variety of areas and their support of society.

Dr the Hon Kennedy Y H Wong, Chairman of the Council and the Court?of HKBU, and Professor Alex Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, officiated the conferment ceremony. Other Council members who attended the ceremony included Mr Paul Poon, Deputy Chairman of the Council and the Court, and Mr Kevin Liem, Treasurer of the Council and the Court.

Professor Alex Wai said the four Honorary University Fellows represent the fields of Chinese medicine, law, sports and architecture, and they command respect not only for their outstanding achievements, but also for their generous spirit and compassion to serve the community and those in need. They have excelled not only in their chosen paths but have also touched lives—mentoring young people, advancing professional standards, advocating for inclusivity, and shaping a better future for Hong Kong.

Professor Wai remarked: “While each of our Honorary University Fellows has a unique story to tell, they all share one thing in common: an unwillingness to be defined or limited by circumstances. They refused to give up in face of challenges. With determination and courage, they rose above obstacles and went on to achieve great things in life. They have already shown us success is possible against all odds. This steadfast pursuit of excellence and perseverance is something HKBU also holds close to heart and strives to instill in our students, staff and the community at large.”

Professor Wai also noted that 2026 will mark HKBU’s 70th anniversary, and there will be a year-long celebration to reflect on the University’s journey and honour those who have shaped its history. He expressed confidence that the visions of the new Honorary University Fellows will guide the University through its course in future.

Speaking on behalf of the other three Honorary University Fellows, Ms Ho Yuen-kei expressed their sincere thanks to the University for conferring upon them this great honour: “This Honorary University Fellowship is more than a personal accolade. It is a beacon of hope and a reminder that with faith, perseverance, and collective support, no barrier is insurmountable. I promise to carry these values forward, to serve the community with a humble heart, and to inspire future generations to believe in themselves and contribute to society with love and strength.”

Ms Ho shared her personal journey, from being diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy to participating in boccia with the support of her family and winning two gold medals at the Paralympic Games in Paris 2024. She encouraged others to focus on their strengths rather than their limitations, quoting HKBU’s motto, Faith and Perseverance, to inspire people to persevere through every challenge with courage and determination. She also called for greater support for vulnerable groups, encouraging everyone to promote equality and social inclusion to build a caring and harmonious society.
